FEMA PhD Student Selected for L.A. Internship

Alyssa Provencio, a first year doctoral student with Oklahoma State University’s Fire and Emergency Management Administration program, was selected from a pool of approximately 70 applicants for a highly competitive internship with the City of Los Angeles.

Provencio is one of three interns chosen to participate in the City of Los Angeles’ Emergency Management Department internship program this summer.

The City of Los Angeles’ EMD internship program has provided more than 20 internships to highly qualified undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students since 2009. Provencio is the first EMD intern to be chosen from a university outside of California.

The EMD interns work for a minimum of ten weeks. Provencio will work on three projects this summer related to the EMD’s three-year overhaul of its emergency operations plans and can be called on to assist any emergency activations should they occur.

Interns get the opportunity to work on substantive projects for the department and gain in-depth knowledge of the field by completing training courses, participating in exercises, providing support to incident and event management, and networking with emergency managers across the country.
